To say that health insurance for pets costs the same as that for humans is ridiculous. It generally costs from $25-85/month (the latter more unusual).
Having had 6 purebred dogs in the last 25 years,I have spent thousands and thousands of dollars on my dog. Just this year one of my dogs had thyroid cancer and,a month after that surgery, had a severe slipped disc in her neck that completely paralyzed her. She is only 8.My other dog,who already has epilepsy, has a severe chronic respiratory infection. The meds cost hundreds of dollars and may run into thousands.
When you buy a pet,it is your responsibilty for life.Dogs often eat things that can cause obstructions, they can get hit by cars ..in other words, you have to think not just of illnesses but of accidents.
Some people may chose to put a dog down rather than get any sophisticated medical care, and I can understand that in some cases. However, people like may one day have to turn to their kids and tell them they don't have enough money to fix their dog's broken leg, or operate on their bowel obstruction.I hope they can sleep at night.
