You may not think that there is much of a difference when you get car insurance for both new and used cars, but actually there is. This is because obviously new cars are going to be a little more reliable than older cars and so the insurance rate will usually reflect that. So, just how do you get affordable car insurance for used cars then?

What You Need to Know About Used Car Insurance

Used car insurance will vary depending upon the make of the car, the size of its engine and how many miles it has done previously. Whereas when you register a new car and insure it, you will need basic details, people with used cars will have to give a little more.

For example, whilst with new cars insurance companies may just want a few basic details about the car and yourself, if they are looking at a used car they may want to know how many owners the car has had previously, how many miles it has done, has it got any existing problems?

You will need to find all of this out before you purchase the used car and the best way to do that is through a mechanic. Simply take one with you when you go to look at the car and they will give it a once over to check for any faults etc. That way you will find out everything that you need to know and you will then be able to pass that onto the insurance company along with a signed piece of paperwork from the mechanic saying the car is ok.

That way it will lower your insurance quote a little as you can prove that the car is in fact ok and that you are not likely to claim in the near future. That is the main worry insurance company's face. They are there simply to get your money and they want to avoid paying out a large sum to you if possible, so they need to know that the car is ok in order to reassure themselves. If there are any problems you can expect the quote to be fairly high, as they will consider it to be a risk to insure you.

There are steps you can take along with getting a mechanic, in order to lower your potential car insurance quote. These include making the car safer by adding secure locking if it hasn't already got it. Just looking at what you can do to decrease the quote will help you to see exactly what can be done. Are you going to be keeping the car in a garage and if not, could you? That would bring the insurance quote down a little as it would be safer from thieves in a garage than it would be on the roadside.

Overall buying car insurance for a used car can be a nightmare if you do not shop around. Expect quotes to be higher than they are for a new car and also try and get the car looked at by a mechanic before you apply for insurance.
